"Discovering an unknown place always means experiencing it in an abstract way. I wanted to explore and exaggerate this notion of abstraction to the point where the beach at Deauville was no longer a beach, but a new planet populated by obscure shapes and figures that seemed to spring from the ground or fall from the sky. My intention was to consider Deauville as a reconstituted landscape whose elements I could rearrange to create a totally new and fictional place. A place where perhaps time stops, or runs at such a speed that one does not even realize it. A place by the sea, where everything begins and everything ends. In short, I wanted to illustrate my experience of Deauville in reference to what everyone feels when they venture into the unknown."
