Guest of the Planche(s) Contact Festival in 2011

Massimo Vitali was born in 1944, in Como, Italy. In 1994, he started photographing the beaches he found close to his house in Toscana. He regularly examined other sites before extending his photographic approach to other places in Italy, such as leisure centers in Rimini, indoor swimming pools in Belgium and winter ski resorts in the Alps. His great success is due to the spectacular aspect of his large-format prints presenting a large and diverse panel of human beings, and to the anthropologic density of his work. He mostly photographs urban beaches, and sometimes wild beaches. His favorite subject seems to reside in the interaction between cities and their leisure sites, such as beaches. In 2011, Deauville provided him with a quality setting with its beach, its reputation, and its cultural and social mix. He decided to photograph the beach from the sea, standing on a 7-meter-high stand.
