The most characteristic of the Belle Epoque villas

Protected as Historic Monuments by decree of October 29, 1975, this imposing residence, far from the seaside, responds to an order from Baron Henri de Rothschild. A great racing fan, the latter chose to locate near the racetrack. The villa was built in 1907 on the site of the Ferme du Coteau, owned by the family of the novelist Gustave Flaubert since 1837.
The Caennais architect Georges Pichereau, pupil of René-Jacques Baumier, realizes a building whose program combines references to learned and Augeronne architecture. The Norman character is reinforced by the development around the house of a large grassy park planted with apple trees, on nearly two hectares. The base in an opus uncertaintyum underlined by curved joints is surmounted by a ground floor of brick and stone arranged in a checkerboard pattern and a story in pan of wood, partially slabs of tiles. An important awning runs on almost all the facades of the villa.
The picturesque aspect of the building is accentuated by the profusion of architectural elements animating the elevations (turrets, bow windows, large terrace on the ground floor) and the recesses of roofs (long-sided roofs, pavilion raised by a pyramidion, imperial) adorned with ceramic finials.
The lively character of the exterior is contrasted by the simplicity of the interior volumes. The west-facing entrance opens onto a central hall which distributes a smoking room, children's lounge and dining room, bedroom and main staircase to the south. This serves the private apartments on the first floor; a service staircase is reserved for house staff.
Inside, you can also admire paintings and sculptures by artist Enrico Campagnola (official website).
Owned by Ralph Beaver Strassburger from 1924, the villa was bequeathed by his heirs to the town in 1980.
