DEAUVILLE The Franciscans - 02 July > 25 September 2022

In the Cour des Expositions des Franciscaines, a tribute is paid to the man whom Deauville liked to call "The King of the Boards". Sixty works accompanied by numerous documents attest to the painter's incomparable and terribly sharp look at French society from the Roaring Twenties to the 60s and at Deauville life in particular. The exhibition also sheds new light on the evolution of the artist's work from 1913.

It was probably in 1903 that Van Dongen first traveled to Normandy.
In the wake of his success at the Salon d'Automne of 1905, which established a new pictorial movement, Fauvism, of which he is recognized as one of the major figures, Van Dongen was spotted by certain Le Havre collectors from the Cercle de l'Art Moderne, among which Pieter van der Velde. He finds on the "Flowered Coast", the light, the natural elements, the sometimes low skies on an uncertain horizon, which are so many atavistic memories of his native Holland. From 1913, a pivotal year for him, Van Dongen took up his "summer quarters" in Deauville each year, like an unchanging ritual, at the Hotel Le Normandy, frequenting a world where the powerful of this world and celebrities mingle. : Mistinguett, Lucien Guitry, Suzy Solidor or the cartoonist Sem, but also Berry Wall, Aga Khan, …
For 50 years, he never stopped returning to Deauville where he executed a series of canvases stamped with Deauville.
The exhibition is divided into several parts in the Cour des Expositions: Normandy, Deauville with its beach and sea bathing, horses, the Orient, the entertainment world, the boy or liberated woman, large portraits. … and show how the artist finds in the atmosphere of the seaside town, his favorite pictorial subjects emblematic of the Roaring Twenties.
A privileged witness of the society of his time, Van Dongen spiced up his works with a sardonic, casual, ironic spirit. The original works of the artist brought together for this unprecedented exhibition are enriched with important iconographic material: photographs, caricatures, books and illustrated publications.
Conferences, readings, workshops for children aged 7 to 10 and a highlight "Le Bal Blanc Van Dongen", a festive and unique replica of the Gala Blanc organized in 1932 by the painter.

Deauville, it fits me like a glove. I find my customers there and it looks like Holland, because of the gray light and the rains on the sea
