TOUQUES, THE HISTORICAL CITY
It is one of the oldest towns in the department and a "small town of character", a label that highlights the rich historical and cultural heritage that it has managed to preserve. Before the seaside resorts, its position on the estuary allowed it to assert a political and maritime predominance over the region in the Middle Ages; every year in June, the city even celebrates the medieval period. Streets and squares decorated with flowers, a stream running through the houses, half-timbered facades typical of the Pays d'Auge, Touques likes to preserve its history. In the heart of the village, artistic life comes alive in the Quartier des Arts and in the old presbytery; on the town hall square, the 15th century covered market shelters weekly markets and jazz aperitifs in summer.
