Guest photographer at Planches Contact 2019

Klavdij Sluban, born on March 3rd, 1963 in Paris, spent his childhood in Livold (Slovenia). When he was a teenager, he fell in love with photography. In 1986, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Anglo-American Literature and participated to a black-and-white printing internship in the studio of Georges Fèvre, then travelled. In 1992, he went back to France and dedicated to photography.
Then, Klavdij Sluban travelled to the Balkans, the Black Sea, the former Soviet Union, the Baltic Sea, the Caribbean Islands, Jerusalem, Latin America, the Asiatic and Chinese regions (with the Trans-Siberian train), Japan and Indonesia - islands of Java, Bali, Sulawesi.
From 1995 to 2005, he conducted a reporting workshop for teenagers at the Centre des Jeunes Détenus (Young Prisoners' Centre) of Fleury-Mérogis (Essonne). Henri Cartier-Bresson often came to encourage them and other photographers like Marc Riboud and William Klein.
Since 1998, he has been pursuing his project and worked with young prisoners of the former Soviet Union’s detention centre. In 2000, he launched a photographic workshop in Celje (Slovenia) in the only prison for young prisoners of the country, as well as in Krusevac and Valjevo (Serbia).
The Bar du Soleil, the casino, the racecourse, the beaches, the Boardwalk…contributed to build up the legend of Deauville. Klavdij Sluban explored them following the texts written by Georges Simenon, Guillaume Apollinaire, Joseph Kessel, Colette or Sacha Guitry. Every photo is accompanied by a quotation that establishes a link between these places and the atmosphere of Deauville.
Open-air exhibition, Avenue Lucien Barrière.
