Saint-Pierre Azif: the renovated church

This authentic village of the Pays d'Auge invites you to discover a charming itinerary: the stud farms, the bucolic paths, the washhouse, the eco-domain of Bouquetot, but also the historic church-museum of Saint-Pierre. An astonishing place, which houses nine paintings by masters of the Flemish school, and recently renovated.

A whole history of church

The Saint-Pierre church has been listed as a historical monument since 1926. Its ancient appearance has managed to remain intact. Only the old furniture has been replaced.
Its architecture dates back to three eras!
The XIIe century for the choir, former seigniorial chapel; for the Lombard tower-bell tower, rising in front. The latter is pierced by a wide porch leading to a double Renaissance door. The central trumeau is decorated with two stone statues.
The end of the fifteenthe century for the nave, whose framework seems to be an inverted ship's hull, lit by eight luminous windows.
The XVIIe century for the hexagonal sacristy, whose openings are largely splayed.
In 2016, the state of the church threatens public safety. The Municipal Council decides to restore it. The architect of the "Atelier Saint-Benoît" took care of the renovation work.
Started in 2017, the restoration was carried out in two stages, over four years.
Two stained glass windows have been renovated: that of Saint-Pierre and that of the miraculous catch. The vaults of the nave and the sacristy were repaired using chestnut staves.
The supports and the framework have been totally revised. The wood, the cracks in the walls, the vaults of the heart have been treated.
The renovation of the stained glass windows has made it possible to identify them: they come from the workshop of Henri Mazuet, in Reims, a famous Norman glass painter. It was also found that some glazed parts would be older and date from the end of the XNUMXth century.e century.
A major cleaning has been carried out, from the chandeliers to the Stations of the Cross, including the fixed furniture.
