What to do in Blonville-sur-Mer?

On one side, the coastline, its long sandy beach and its breathtaking villas. On the other, part of the Blonville-Villers Marsh, an island of greenery where remarkable flora and fauna cohabit. Blonville-sur-Mer is a seaside resort with the Family Plus label, and children are kings; the horses of the equestrian center wander on the beach, and the sailboats set off into the sea.

Until the middle of the 19th century, Blonville(-sur-Mer) was an essentially rural village. The resort and the fashion for sea bathing, added to the opening of a coastal road in 1862 between Honfleur and Cabourg, brought this small family seaside resort closer to the coast.

The must-haves

Observe the fauna and flora of the Blonville-Villers marsh

Lucile Loisel

Bordering the villas and mansions installed on the seafront, a vast iodized countryside of 120 hectares borders the sea. It is the Marsh of Blonville-Villers. Here, the fresh water secretly keeps life alive; the fauna takes refuge there and the flora flourishes. The only green space on the Côte Fleurie, it shelters an immense body of water where its feathered inhabitants splash around in the middle of a singular vegetation. As the seasons go by, the yellow marsh marigold gradually gives way to the loose-flowered orchid, the downy marshmallow and the Giant Hogweed before going to sleep for a winter break.

All around, paths accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders are conducive to the observation and contemplation of this ecosystem. It is also an invitation to bird-watching, where it is possible to observe the beautiful grey heron all year round, accompanied by the tree frog, the rare bittern, and even white storks. Don't forget the binoculars!

Walking on the beach

Stretching over nearly 2km, the beach of Blonville-sur-Mer is lined with seaside villas in styles as different as they are sumptuous. At their feet, a promenade of planksAt their feet, a promenade of boards, placed there to admire them. As you stroll to the neighboring town, a whole atmosphere unfolds:

Thus, the beach of Blonville-sur-Mer alone justifies the nickname given to the seaside resort since the 20th century: "the children's paradise".

Discover the heritage along the streets

The Town Hall of Blonville-sur-Mer, a magnificent Norman-style building Plein Format Agency - Calvados Attractiveness

Sometimes you just have to look up to discover architectural nuggets. This is the case in Blonville-sur-Mer, where where sumptuous villas abound in the streets of the village up to the beach. Unlike the vast majority of houses that are now private, the most emblematic villa is public: it is the Town Hall of Blonville-sur-Mer. The first part of the facade is decorated with checkerboards, followed by stone and woodwork to underline the brick roof; the Norman style in all its splendor.

To contemplate other remarkable villas, take the following streets: rue Hoinville, rue Avézard, avenue Beauséjour and avenue Michel d'Ornano (towards Villers-sur-Mer).

Two churches are also worth a look: on the land side, thechurch of Our Lady of the Visitationwhere you can admire a magnificent altarpiece, a bell tower, side altars and a pulpit, all dating from the 18th century. On the sea side, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption. On the walls, no stained glass windows, but a dozen frescoes drawn by the painter Jean-Denis Maillart, between 1960 and 1962, retracing the main stages of the life of the Virgin Mary.

❤ Our favorite: the historicist-style mansions that line the waterfront and embark on a journey to the early 20th century.
