Gaspard Koenig, philosopher and writer, comments on his new book, "Our wandering freedom: riding in the footsteps of Montaigne" (Editions de l'Observatoire Le Point, 2021).
The horseback journey he made from June to November 2020 across Europe, a wandering to discover landscapes, lives, and people on the same paths as those taken by Montaigne in 1580.
“I know what I'm fleeing from, but not what I'm looking for,” explained Montaigne about the long ride. Gaspard Kœnig also knows what he is fleeing: the permanent injunctions of governments and algorithms. He therefore embarked on the footsteps of Montaigne, following the same route, with the same means of transport: a horse, or rather Destinada, a mare. To reach Rome, the rider and his horse traveled 2 kilometers for five months, passing through Périgord, Champagne, the Vosges, Bavaria and Tuscany...
The opportunity for the author to reconnect with themes dear to Montaigne: the relationship between man and animal, the art of counting, religious conflicts, the diversity of cultures or the lessons of nature...
