A genius who had remained in the shadow of his friend Shostakovich for too long, Weinberg today never ceases to dazzle the performers and the public who are discovering his immense and multiple work. There is no doubt that Jonas Vitaud, a great performer of Russian music, will find in his young partners and the most prominent chamber music friends of their generation, accomplices as inhabited as he is.
This hauntingly polyphonic sextet, more Russian than Florentine, is Tchaikovsky's chamber music masterpiece. Chants and Russian dances are intertwined with a mastery that demands from its six performers virtuosity, charm and constant commitment.
