Normandy, casino, Printemps: 110 years of loyalty to Deauville

The Hôtel Barrière Le Normandy, the Casino Barrière Deauville and the Le Printemps Deauville store have accompanied the Deauville seasons for 110 years. The Normandy and the casino are the first establishments born from the Barrière family group. Just like Le Printemps, their owners imagined and built in 1912 in Deauville the first stones which contributed to their development and that of the seaside resort.

To tell Normandy is to open a love dictionary

With pickaxes, the Normandy hotel has built its history. The pickaxes of the builders of course, and then the "good pickaxes", those of the meetings of a prestigious hodgepodge of artists and great characters of the time, lovers of a spirit and a style: entertainment . Inaugurated in 1912, chroniclers of Parisian and New York social life wrote that it was "the most beautiful hotel in the world". There were then 300 bedrooms with bathroom, 30 living rooms, a ceremonial dining room of 170 square meters. All to discover an interior promenade of 11 kilometers of carpets (!), lined with 200 light bulbs, 000 kilometers of wallpaper stretched on the walls and the famous Toile de Jouy which dresses the rooms and suites in its shades of color. vegetal and mineral, both solemn and familiar...

So said its architect, Théo Petit: "Le Normandy? It has the atmosphere of an Anglo-Norman cottage with Norman gables and linen sheets, apple trees and Norman cows in its garden." In short, a large ornate house with its unexpected pinnacles, its colorful tiles.

After the Great War, the Normandy quickly regained its clientele and the biggest names of the Roaring Twenties: Winston Churchill had a discreet vacation there with his wife Clémentine, the Prince of Wales, a bachelor, dropped anchor there in 1924, Coco Chanel opened a shop there, painters, actors, writers, all of Paris of the arts, but also businessmen and industrialists such as André Citroën stayed there in complete idleness. In 1925, the Société des Hôtels et Casino de Deauville undertook to enlarge the building. The 1930s drew the continuation of the decades, interspersed with a second world war that Le Normandy overcame within its walls and in its spirit. Later, it became the setting for some legendary cinema images, including of course the film "A Man and a Woman" by Claude Lelouch (Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and awarded the same year in 1966 by an Oscar in Hollywood ). Since 1975, it has been the setting for the Deauville American Film Festival, which attracts the giants of the big screen. Jack Nicholson is amazed by the gallery of 147 whiskey references offered by the Bar du Normandy! New era, new decoration, in winter 2015-2016, the Normandy is being renovated. It closes its doors for a few months, for the first time since its opening in 1912. A new Normandy is reborn, transformed, surprising, without altering the soul of this mythical hotel.

In the distance, the Normandy hotel with innumerable windows lit up with geraniums, the creamy white casino, all embroidered with balusters, shine in the sun under a sky washed with watercolors where pleasant clouds of meringues are rounded. Delicious pictures of happy life in flannel and white shoes. The time is exquisite ...

The casino invents day and night differently

With the invention of the Normandy, the founders François André and Eugène Cornuché entrusted a mission to the architect Georges Wybo. The man who designs leisure buildings is particularly known for his creation of the Printemps department stores, popular with all of Paris. Its mission: to put its art at the service of the decorations, ornaments and comfort of the gaming rooms of a casino. Georges Wybo offers an architecture with references to the French 11th and 1912th centuries, rounded wings, large and high window frames... and the small theatre, a quasi-replica of the performance hall enjoyed by King Louis XIV at the Château de Versailles. On the day of the inauguration, July 1988, 365, the show is also in the room, with the presence of personalities from the diplomatic and political world, the arts and industry. Winning bet, conquered Paris. The gazettes are under the spell. The years go by. The talents and their artistic universes follow one another on the stage of the casino: stars of song with Charles Aznavour, of dance and defectors from the Russian Ballet with Rudolf Nureyev, of cinema with the lovers of Lelouch, of the novel with Françoise Sagan who prefer the gaming tables. In 700 slot machines made their appearance. Lucien Barrière, nephew of François André, then led the Group and undertook a complete renovation of the casino with the aim of making it the most beautiful and modern casino in Europe. In just four months, the project was born and offers new spaces: a vast room with 2000 slot machines, four restaurants, three bars, a night club, reception rooms and a XNUMX-seat cinema. Twelve years later, in XNUMX, the decorator Jacques Garcia took part in this constantly renewed innovation by signing the current decoration of the Casino Barrière Deauville.

Printemps follows its customers to Deauville

Opened in 1912, Printemps Deauville was the very first branch of a department store in the provinces and one of the first fashion boutiques to set up shop in Deauville. Like Normandy and the casino, the creation of this "novelty store" is an integral part of the town planning projects of the seaside resort. While leisure and travel are developing, vacationers are settling in Deauville for the summer season, Le Printemps sees this as an opportunity and undertakes to accompany them there. This is a first for a Parisian department store. The sign, open exclusively in the summer, takes up residence in an authentic Norman house. The sales assistants are recruited from among the best employees of the Parisian flagship and housed in a reserved villa. This new address is characteristic of the company's policy: to meet its customers. Be at the right time, in the right place. In fact, the Normandy branch will be the first link in a long chain of stores in the provinces.
