Born in 1958 in Bucharest (Romania), he was an actor at the Yiddish theater in Bucharest when he fled Ceaucescu's dictatorship in 1980 to go to Paris where he joined the IDHEC. He worked as an editor, assistant director and made several short films. He gained international recognition with Train de vie. The themes dear to the filmmaker, exile and identity, are at the heart of this film and the following ones. He won the 2006 César for Best Original Screenplay for Va, vis et deviens as well as a Golden Globe nomination and two Césars for Le Concert. The Source of Women was presented in Competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
