François Monique is a shellfish sloop originally from Brest harbor, where she was built by Auguste Tertu at Chantier du Fret. She was first launched on September 16, 1935. It was built on behalf of Hervé Salaün, a scallop fisherman who also harvested maerl (limestone sand) for soil improvement and red seaweed for fertilizing fields.
The origin of the boat's christening name is François, the name of the boat's godfather, François Kermarrec, the first sailor on board, and Monique, the niece of Hervé Salün.
In 2008, the old rig was bought by Franck Brize and repatriated to Deauville. He set up the Petit Foc association, and then began restoring the boat with the help of volunteers and subsidies from public bodies and local partners, restoring her to her former glory as a Brest harbor shellboat, with her original colors and rigging.
The François Monique can be taken on board during outings organized each year by the association.
