The Franciscans are one year old!

The development of an ambitious cultural policy

We come to the Franciscaines as we go to Place Morny or to the Planches! The term has now entered the geographical vocabulary of the city. Beyond a museum or a library, the establishment of the Franciscans has become a place of life.
After a year of practice, the design of the buildings imagined by the architect Alain Moatti proves to be ideal. The transparency and dialogue between the spaces allow the visitor to have a general view of the site, to appropriate it, to move around easily. The friendly and open space makes each proposal accessible, even to the most timid. By decompartmentalizing culture, Les Franciscaines has succeeded in attracting all profiles and all generations.

1 year of emotions

In line with the cultural policy initiated by Philippe Augier in 1995, Les Franciscaines now embodies the place of culture that Deauville and all of its festivals and cultural events lacked. It allowed them to grow. The forty or so previously scheduled cultural events were followed this year by 150 proposals. Two emblematic Deauville festivals - Contact sheets, Books and Music - have found their place and attracted a large audience. The night of museums also made it possible to receive more than a thousand visitors.
Artistic performances, meetings, readings, shows or film screenings, the seasons that have followed since the opening in May 2021 have left beautiful memories.

In July 2021, Delphine Horvilleur, rabbi, inaugurated the summer conferences and evoked The place of Eden in Judaism in front of a full auditorium and carried away by her charisma.
In August, Ethery Pagava, 85, former star dancer of the Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas, invited for a dance conference, testified with breathtaking energy to the company's repertoire which enchanted the Deauville summers from 1949 to 1962, embarking the hall in his dance.
In December 2021, an unprecedented sensory experience was offered by Jean-François Ziegel who improvised musical paintings from Deauville. His talent and his imagination enchanted the public.
In March 2022, Yasmina Khadra came for two days to the Franciscaines to comment on the film adaptation of her novel Les Hirondelles de Kaboul, meet high school students and present her new book Pour l'amour d'Elena in front of an audience won over by the emotion.
As part of the L'imaginaire à l'oeuvre meetings, an artist is invited to perform and then to talk about the books and authors who have stimulated their imagination: CharlElie Couture, who inaugurated this format in July, then Cali in March, offered the public intense moments of sharing.
Last February, Dabadie or The Things of Our Lives was presented, a funny and moving musical show that explores, in songs and film dialogues, the work of Jean-Loup Dabadie (1938-2020). This original creation, driven by Les Franciscaines, brings together Clarika and Maissiat, singers, and actor and director Emmanuel Noblet. The show, a real success, went on tour and will return to the Franciscans in the fall of 2022.

1 year transmission

2 students have been welcomed since the opening of the place. The team of Franciscans pays particular attention to making culture accessible to young people. The values of transmitting and supporting young audiences are at the heart of its cultural policy. Because exploring, reading, making, exchanging, playing are all ways to emancipate oneself, to open up to the world and to stimulate one's creativity. Events are specifically invented for them, such as the Teenagers' Prize, which introduces young people to reading, shows are organized for them, and spaces are dedicated to them.

For each school event, educational files, adapted to each level from kindergarten to high school, are made available to teachers. The mediators can accompany the classes for the visit of an exhibition, or the animation of workshops. Finally, performances of shows are scheduled during school time so that classes can attend.

1 year of exhibitions

The exhibitions offered by The Franciscans are always novel designs. They are imagined by and for the establishment with a dedicated curator and scientific council, formed according to each new subject. The approach of Franciscans is also driven by the desire to show the public the great variety of the artistic field, in terms of techniques. In the Universes as in the exhibitions, are presented at the same level of reading, old and contemporary photographs, prints, drawings, paintings, sculptures etc.

Donations and acquisitions

If the Hamburg donation motivated the museum project of the Franciscans, the City also benefits from donations, such as that of Isabel and Louis Romanet, which has made it possible to feed two large funds dedicated to horses and to Deauville. In addition, of the 22 works received as donations this year, two complete exhibitions by photographer Denis Rouvre (Low tide et Automatically) were also bequeathed to Franciscans.

Les Franciscaines also regularly acquires works related to the history of the City. Dhe photographs of Joséphine Baker on the boards, a work by Kees Van Dongen on the life of Rembrandt, original engravings by Sem, a nude signed by André Hamburg... have joined, among others, the collections of the City of Deauville. In addition, 59 works were restored within the conservation workshop of Franciscans.
