THE PARASOL, ONE OF THE SYMBOLS OF DEAUVILLE

Probably the most photographed, the parasol of Deauville is not for sale anywhere. Every year, they come out of the city's workshops, where they are manufactured, repaired and cared for, and then rented to you from April to September.

Béatrice Augier
City of Deauville

From 1875 onwards, Deauville installed parasols on its beach. Over the years, it has changed. Abandonment of the stripes in the 1930s, successive codifications from the post-war period to the 1960s, with a unique diameter, bangs, wooden tips, its colors and this very particular way of tying the skirts of these, when the parasol is folded and planted in the sand. Colorful and photogenic, isolated, in rows, in silhouette, or in close-ups, the parasol in Deauville has seduced for more than a century all the artists who have transcribed or photographed its beach: Fernand Léger, Kees van Dongen, André Hambourg, James Rassiat, Emeric Feher, John Batho, Massimo Vitali... It has become, through a multitude of declensions, a visual element whose silhouette and colors symbolize the city.

It was in 1977 that John Batho photographed his first parasols in Deauville at a time when black and white dominated the photographic production exhibited in museums. He is then in full research and in search of "places of colors". The beach of Deauville is a must.

"Photographing these umbrellas, their shapes and colors, is an attempt to reconstruct how the architecture of color is organized in space. It is to construct color rhythms and to share them in a joyful way, finding the same spontaneity that a can of paint overturned on the beach would provoke.
