The collections site is launched for the future Franciscan Museum!
The construction of Les Franciscaines building is progressing quickly and well. The museum's team is delighted with this progress and is also working on a more secret project, less visible to the public but just as important: the construction of the collections. Each step in the preparation of the transfer of the works to Les Franciscaines at the beginning of 2020 is timed and meticulously anticipated.
How is the collections project going?
The work on the collections begins with a legal assessment to verify that each work has been approved by the City of Deauville's Municipal Council, which is the owner or custodian. Next comes the pre-inventory or "recolement", an important step that allows us to assign or verify the inventory number of the work in order to authenticate it more quickly and officially at each stage of the work that awaits them. The marking is then affixed according to conservation standards.
The condition of the painting is the most important step. Dozens of control points are reviewed in order to know precisely the state of conservation of the paint layer, the support and its frame. Concentration and calm are required! This step is carried out in parallel with a dusting, if necessary, and the campaign to take pictures of the paintings, also called digitization. The digitized file will make it possible to keep a record of the condition of the work, to publish it and to study it without having to take it out of storage in order to limit handling.
The final stage of the project is the packaging of the paintings in long-term conservation packaging, followed by their transport and storage in suitable conditions.
