Story 16: Visiting the heritage
Visit to Villa Strassburger, the most emblematic villa of the Norman styleValentin Guesdon

At the end of the XNUMXth century, the rise of sea bathing
introduced to the coast lush villas and buildings
from a wide variety of architectural genres.
The first buildings, dating from the Second Empire, proudly display
bricks and embossed ornaments. Later, the importance of nature
founds a new relationship to the living environment,
organizing the house around large openings: bow windows, loggias
and balconies enliven the facades. Then, it will be the historicist current, a clever mixture of influences
borrowed from classic styles (Italian, Flemish, medieval, renaissance ...).
In the 1920s, it was the Norman style that finally imposed itself,
combining colored timber-framed walls, checkered brick fittings, and roof recesses.
In a completely different style, deliberately more modern, inDeauville is also known
for its Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings. This unique heritage
gives the territory an original, distinctive and precious charm,
to discover along the streets or during guided tours offered by tourist information offices.

Protected as a Historic Monument since 1975, this imposing Norman regionalist-style residence was commissioned by Baron Henri de Rothschild. Property of the American press publisher Ralph Beaver Strassburger from 1924, the villa was bequeathed by his heirs to the City of Deauville in 1980.
