Story 20: Strolling through a dream garden

Story 20: Strolling through a dream garden
Calouste Gulbenkian ParkSandrine Boyer-Engel

Normandy, land of gardens.
French or English, botanical or exotic,
classic or contemporary style,
Normandy's gardens are captivating in their beauty.
You can stroll through shady alleys or along a river,
relax on a bench listening to the birds singing,
smell the fragrant plants.

Calouste Park
Gulbenkian
______________

The Domaine des Enclos, located in the hills above Bénerville-sur-Mer, was acquired in 1937 by Calouste Gulbenkian, a businessman and aesthete in equal measure. In buying the estate, he realized his dream of a "garden of his own". The house, surrounded by a vast park, had fallen into oblivion. He had the hotel demolished and entrusted the creation of the garden to landscape architect Achille Duchêne. Duchêne combined the classical style of French gardens, with their geometrically arranged parterres, the more natural layout of English gardens and the Italian style, with its pointed yews and balustrades. Since the death of Calouste Gulbenkian in 1955, the park has been managed by the Gulbenkian Foundation, which donated it to the City of Deauville in 1973.

The Parc des Graves
______________

In Villerville, the Parc des Graves descends from the top of the Cliffs of the Roches Noires - Pointe du Heurt to the beach and opens a large and magnificent window on the sea. At the bend of nearly three kilometers of paths, one of which leads directly to the sand, you will find exotic vegetation, witness to a time when beautiful villas occupied this space. Rare species mingle with local plants (crambe maritime, polypogon de Montpellier, hellebore fetid) and wild plant species.
