Story 16: Visiting Heritage

Story 16: Visiting Heritage
Visit to the Villa Strassburger, the most emblematic villa of the Norman styleValentin Guesdon

At the end of the 19th century, the boom in sea bathing
brought to the coast luxurious villas and buildings
in a wide variety of architectural styles.
The first buildings, dating from the Second Empire, proudly display
brickwork and embossed ornamentation. Later, the importance of nature
a new relationship to the living environment,
with large openings: bow windows, loggias and balconies
and balconies. Then came the historicist movement, a skilful blend of influences
borrowed from classical styles (Italian, Flemish, medieval, Renaissance...).
In the 1920s, the Norman style finally took hold,
combining colored half-timbering, checkerboard brickwork and roof overhangs.
In a completely different, deliberately more modern style, Deauville is also known for its
for its Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings.
