David Goffin

David Goffin took his first steps in tennis at the age of 5 with Michel, his father, tennis coach at Barchon Club, and Michèle Gurdal. At the age of 8, he did an internship at Sergi Bruguera's academy in Barcelona in Spain followed by the Saddlebrook Academies in Tampa in Florida. He was subsequently admitted to the tennis-studies center in Mons, managed by the Association francophone de tennis (AFT) and studied at the Athénée Marguerite Bervoets. He was trained by Réginald Willems until March 2014. He is currently trained by Thierry Van Cleemput.

David Goffin was discovered in the eyes of the world when he joined the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament (Roland-Garros 2012) for the first time, as a lucky loser. In the first round, he meets the 27th in the world, Radek Štěpánek, whom he defeats in 5 sets. In the second round, he defeated Frenchman Arnaud Clément, who participated by invitation to his last Roland-Garros. After a victory against Kubot, he lost in the 1/8 final in 4 sets against Roger Federer after a superb match. Since then, he has won four singles tournaments on the ATP circuit and reached two 1/4 finals in the Grand Slam, at Roland Garros in 2016 and at the Australian Open in 2017, the year he reached the final of the Masters after defeating Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, respectively world numbers 1 and 2. He ended the 2017 season with the Davis Cup final against France, but his team lost 2-3.
