David Goffin

David Goffin took his first steps in the world of tennis when he was 5, with Michel, his father, tennis trainer at the Barchon Club, and Michèle Gurdal. At the age of 8, he followed a course at the Academy of Sergi Bruguera in Barcelona (Spain), then he attended the Saddlebrook Academies in Tampa (Florida). He was admitted to the tennis-studies centre of Mons, under the direction of the “Association francophone de tennis” (AFT) and studied at the Athénée Marguerite Bervoets. He was trained by Réginald Willems until March 2014. He is now trained by Thierry Van Cleemput.

David Goffin was discovered by the rest of the world when he was integrated for the first time to the main panel of the Grand Chelem (Roland-Garros 2012), as a lucky loser. At the first round, he rivaled against n.27 in the world, Radek Štěpánek, beaten in 15 sets. At the last tour, he defeated French Arnaud Clément, invited to participate to his last Roland-Garros. After a victory against Kubot, he lost the 4-set eight-final against Roger Federer at the end of a great match. Since then, he has won 4 singles tournaments of the ATP circuit, reached two Grand Chelem quarter-finals, at the Roland-Garros in 2016 and at the Open of Australia in 2017, the same year in which he reached the Masters final after beating Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, respectively n.1 and n.2 in the world. He finished the 2017 season with the final of the Davis Cup against France, but his team obtained 2-3.
