James Franco

Director, actor & producer

For James Franco, filming history means updating it, subjecting it to a new reading. Guided by feathers that have been able to weave reality from fictitious lifelines, he revisits the past of his country to explain the doubts of his present: he draws on the "Stream of Consciousness" by William Faulkner to study our relation to the mourning in While I agonize, and the social decay with Noise and fury. It also adapts In a dubious fight by John Steinbeck, who deals with peasant revolts in the 1930s in California, or A child of God by Cormac McCarthy, who follows the descent into hell of a sick spirit in Tennessee in the 1950s.

He does not hesitate, however, to free himself from these literary supports: in Sal Island, it rewrites and traces the last days of the late Sal Mineo, an openly gay American actor who was murdered in 1976; with Zeroville, it widens the angle to depict the decadent universe of Hollywood at the same time.

If he revealed himself to the world in front of the camera by playing Harry Osborn in the trilogy Spider-Man by Sam Raimi, he never stopped exploring new horizons. More than an actor or a director, James Franco is now an accomplished and complete artist.
The American Film Festival will pay tribute to him in his presence. On this occasion, the Festival will preview its new film as a director, In Dubious Battle.
