Festival of the sea
In Villerville, this tradition has been perpetuated since 1896. The town drapes its streets with fishing nets and remembers the sailors and fishermen who have passed away. The festivities begin in the morning with the firing of a cannonball. This is followed by a religious ceremony in the church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, followed by the traditional parade with music through the streets of the village. With bagpipes playing in the background, veterans, officials and little sailors, proud to carry at arm's length the twenty or so carefully decorated model ships, set sail for the blessing at sea in homage to those lost at sea.
