Sea festival

In Villerville, this tradition has been perpetuated since 1896. The town drapes its streets with fishing nets and celebrates the blessing of the sea in memory of sailors and fishermen who have disappeared.

The festivities begin at 8 a.m. with the firing of a cannonball.

A religious ceremony follows at 10 a.m. in the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption for those perished at sea.

Around 11:30 a.m. the traditional musical parade through the streets of the village. Against a background of bagpipes (with the Scottish brass band Celtic Pipes), the veterans, the officials, followed by the little sailors (reinforced by the children of the campsite) are proud to carry at arm's length the twenty carefully decorated model boats, lent by the Sailors' Society of Honfleur, and to set sail for the sea, accompanied by all those who want to follow them.

The procession will cross Abbé Duchemin, Maréchal Foch, Général de Gaulle, Butin, Mahu and Daubigny streets to arrive at rue des Bains. All this course will be richly decorated by the volunteers who have been making and repairing flowers and nets for several weeks.

In the rue des Bains (on the dyke) will be erected the High Altar, where Monsignor Lecompte and the Mayor will be present, who will leave around 12:30 p.m. in a zodiac with the SNSM for the blessing at sea, and the homage to those perished at sea by throwing a wreath of flowers.

A cocktail will then be served from 13 p.m. on the dike.

It will be possible to eat on site thanks to the presence of food-trucks from 13:30 p.m.: shrimp/whelks plate, Jambalaya, apple pie and drinks.
