Exhibition: "The values of sport
The City of Deauville, in partnership with the sports daily L'Equipe and the photographic engineering agency BITL Agency, is presenting a large-format outdoor exhibition of 30 photographs representing the ethical and social values that go hand in hand with satisfying and fulfilling sporting activities, whether amateur or professional.
To design this exhibition, the experts in L'Equipe's photo department carried out an initial census of 1,000 photographs likely to illustrate "The values of sport" from among the millions in the newspaper's photographic collection. Guided by François Gille, head of L'Equipe's photo editing department, Philippe Augier, mayor of Deauville, the newspaper's photo department team and Agnès Vergez from BITL Agency then narrowed the selection down to the 30 photographs that will be exhibited in Deauville. Their choice fell on the most emblematic photographs of historic moments of emotion (Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal hand in hand), exceptional gestures of fraternity (Paul Chélimo congratulating Mohamed Farah), and the consecrations of great contemporary sportsmen and women (Serena Williams, Marie-José Perec, Kevin Mayer). Photographs that are bound to inspire admiration and vocations!
In Deauville, sport has played a major role since the town was founded: sport is a source of personal fulfillment, an essential factor in education and a social bond. This passion for sport is reflected in the regular hosting of major sporting events and top-level national and international teams in a wide range of disciplines. Residents, associations and schoolchildren also benefit on a daily basis from this proactive and educational policy, which aims to cultivate a taste for effort and the sporting values of respect, sharing, discipline, self-control and surpassing oneself.
L'Equipe's photo collection comprises 13 million images, including the work of L'Equipe's photographers since its origins (1946), as well as the historical collections of the daily Excelsior (1910 to 1940) and the weekly Miroir des sports (1920 to 1968). This collection tells as much about the history of sport as it does about the history of photography. François Gille's team processes 30,000 to 40,000 photographs a month: iconography for the newspaper's various media and, since 2019, for various exhibition projects, print sales and auctions.
