On deposit with the Franciscans since January 2020, the Peindre en Normandie collection is exhibited in the gallery dedicated to the Masters of Painting. From Delacroix to Dufy the exhibition explores the famous current of Impressionism in the intimacy of painters, whether they are precursors, leaders or heirs of the movement.

Nature, an inexhaustible source of inspiration, does not escape the brush of impressionist painters. On small formats, they capture their emotions and sensations in the face of what they see. In the order of the intimate, the sketch does not however aim to reduce the field of possibilities, on the contrary. It becomes a significant space for experimentation, allowing the influences and convergences of the Impressionist movement to be traced.
Normandy, home to many artists, sees the full development of artistic movements: from naturalism to the birth of Impressionism through pointillism to Fauvism, the course illustrates how Impressionism, a major artistic movement of the second half of the XNUMXth century, inspired many artists until the beginning of the XNUMXth century.
If Eugène Boudin or Adolphe-Félix Cals take full advantage of the rapid touch of the Impressionists and seize the infinite variations of color, others such as Othon Friesz or Raoul Dufy only recover the effects of light and colored shadows, preferring to detach themselves from the running to find their own way. Auguste Renoir or Henri Le Sidanner themselves also benefit from the research of their peers to synthesize their impressions of nature on the canvas. Impressionism therefore finds itself at the confluence of many artistic impulses, revealing the complexity of this movement.

Created in 1992 at the initiative of the Regional Council of Normandy and private partners, the association Peindre en Normandie now boasts 185 works. This unique collection, cultural ambassador of the Normandy Region, has joined the Franciscan spaces since the establishment opened to the public in May 2021. The works can now be found in the Universes Deauville, Cheval and Art de Vivre.
Curator of the exhibition by Alain Tapié, scientific director of the Peindre en Normandie collection.
