SEA FESTIVAL SEA
In Villerville, this tradition has been carried on since 1896. The town drapes its streets with fishing nets and celebrates the blessing of the sea in memory of the sailors and fishermen who have died.
The festivities kick off in the morning with a religious ceremony in the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption church, attended by the sailors' and veterans' flag-bearers. Joined by villervillais children and watched by passers-by, the traditional musical parade through the village streets follows.
To the accompaniment of bagpipes and in single file, the little sailors proudly carry at arm's length the twenty or so model boats on loan from the Société des marins de Honfleur, and set sail for the sea. On arrival at the seawall, officials invite residents and visitors to observe a minute's silence, before offering a wreath of flowers to the sea. Offshore, boats honk their horns to accompany the blessing of the sea.
Concerts and entertainment then take over to prolong this day which honors the people of the sea.
