DEAUVILLE LES FRANCISCAINES - January 27 > June 25, 2023

"POP SPIRIT, ARE YOU THERE?", DIVING INTO THE POP YEARS
An exhibition on what the sixties, the pop years, have brought and continue to bring aesthetically.

Pop art, pop culture, pop music... Although they have different meanings, these three expressions keep something sparkling, rendered by the onomatopoeia "pop" as a discharge of energy. The singularity of "pop" is defined as an artistic movement linked to the appearance of a mass culture. The artist is no longer this solitary, producing elitist works. It is a man, a woman, who produces words, images for the magazines... The works "pop", in their quasi industrial character, nourished of the new iconography that brings the consumer society, manifest this link with the most democratic forms of the culture.

From the origins to the pop heritage, level 2 of the André Hambourg museum is a journey through the different expressions of pop art from the 1960s to today. Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, dialogue with William Klein, David La Chapelle or Nina Childress. The rest of the visit in the Galerie des Maîtres takes on a psychedelic feel with the soaring works of five emblematic graphic artists of the years 1966 to 1969 in the form of liquid lettering, concert posters or vinyl sleeves restoring the sensory experience of LSD banned in 1966. The exhibition ends by leaving the traveler wondering about the impact of this pop culture on our present. Pop spirit, are you still there? It is certainly present at the Franciscaines.

Included in the POP-ART HAMBURG PASS, the exhibition "New York 1970, drawings by André Hambourg" extends the transatlantic journey. The Pop Art movement was born in New York, so it is only natural that it should be displayed on the first level of the Hambourg Museum.

The majority of the pieces presented are from the Fondation Carmignac, galleries and private collections. Curator of the exhibition: Thierry Grillet, former director of cultural diffusion at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, essayist, writer, curator and Fellow Associate at the Ideas and Imagination Foundation of Columbia University (New York).
