EXHIBITION:"ANDRÉ HAMBOURG, NEW YORK 1970, DRAWINGS
Just as Pop Art went from Europe to the United States to find new inspiration, this exhibition accompanies André Hambourg from France to New York where he renews and enriches his creativity.
For the first time presented to the public, a set of drawings from the 3,600 pieces in the collection shows the artist's ability to "sketch" the world around him. André Hambourg (1909-1999) never went out without a notebook (white with spirals) and a pencil (black). It was impossible for him to resist the scene on Fifth Avenue, the birds pirouetting in front of the Statue of Liberty, or the young people strolling around Central Park.
The discovery of the excessiveness of the buildings and the recurrence of the subjects represented (skyscrapers, the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Army Plaza, etc.) echo the series by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. New York embodies the parallel between two currents of figurative creation, coexisting simultaneously in the late 1960s and 1970s.
"The Big Apple" having nourished the Pop Art movement, the transatlantic journey continues with the exhibition "Esprit Pop, es-tu là?" (included in the Pop-Art Hamburg Pass) which will find its development in the Master Gallery and on level two of the Hamburg Franciscan Museum.
Curator of the exhibition: Annie Madet-Vache, director of the Musée des Franciscaines, specialist of André Hambourg and art historian
