Rudy Dumas
Artist

Guest of the festival L'Appel du Large 2021
Rudy Dumas was born into a family of gypsies and "hit the road" all his young years following the family circus. Perhaps it is indeed there, on these unpicturesque areas of abandoned urbanity, that he invented́ his landscape, a carnival of forms that draws its essence from an immediate, interior, bloated, dirty, gray, derelict, abandoned environment, beautiful as a disemboweled springboard, a burning car, a screaming oil bottle, a stretch of wall covered in lizards. With one foot in the institution and the other in theUnderground, he deploys a double game from one territory to the other and summons our reflection on the position we have in society.

As part of the festival L'Appel du Large, which will take place from July 2 to 4, 2021, Rudy Dumas will exhibit a sculpture entitled"Essence". The day the artist became "non-essential" in France, a questioning appeared, that of our legitimacy within our society. While the essence of the artist, the essence of a wood or the essence as fuel to make the mechanical cogs work and which are used to sharpen our critical minds, it is at this very moment that our essence makes work. When the typography of the word essence mixes with materials, when the distinction with its alter ego is no longer, it is one, by extension it finds its essence in the decor, it is here poetry observed through the prism that a single word can symbolize.
