Casarès-Camus for a loving and theatrical dialogue

For one evening, Anne-Marie Philipe and Jérôme Garcin will embody on the stage of the Théâtre du Casino Barrière Deauville the loving, artistic and intellectual correspondence that linked Albert Camus and Maria Casarès until the day before the writer's death. An unforgettable moment.

The fiery loves of Maria Casarès and Albert Camus, through a selection of their 865 letters exchanged between March 1944 and January 1960, are at the heart of this new edition of L'Amour en toutes lettres. An original reading for a dive into the artistic and literary ferment of the post-war period. A unique evening to share the strength of feelings and their passion for love. An exceptional moment carried once again by Anne-Marie Philipe joined on stage, for the first time, by Jérôme Garcin.

Maria Casarès and Albert Camus: the mythical lovers

On March 19, 1944, Albert Camus and Maria Casarès met at Michel Leiris' home. The former student of the Conservatory, originally from La Coruña and daughter of a Spanish Republican in exile, was only twenty-one years old. The writer lived alone in Paris, the war having kept him away from his wife Francine, a teacher in Oran. Sensitive to the talent of the actress, Albert Camus entrusted her with the role of Martha for the creation of The Misunderstanding in June 1944. And during the night of the D-Day landings, Albert Camus and Maria Casarès became lovers. This is still only the prelude to a great love story, which will take its real start in 1948.
Until the accidental death of the writer in 1960, Albert and Maria never stopped writing to each other, especially during the long weeks of separation due to their artistic and intellectual commitment, stays in the great outdoors or family obligations. Against a backdrop of public life and creative activity, their crossed correspondence reveals the intensity of their intimate relationship, which was experienced in the lack and absence as much as in the mutual consent, the burning of desire, the enjoyment of shared days, the work in common and the quest for true love, its perfect formulation and its fulfillment.
