Behind the scenes of August sales

While the future racing stars are preparing to go under the auction fire at Arqana, Antoine Bellanger, head of yearlings at the Ecurie des Monceaux welcomed us for the preparation of the sale. The Haras des Monceaux created in 1925 by Ralph Beaver Strassburger is a historic stud farm in the Pays d'Auge. Since 2003, it has acquired a prominent place among the best French breeders.

Urban Sea "La Matrone"

Presented by Haras d'Etreham at the August 1990 Yearling Sale where it was bought 280 Francs by trainer Jean Lesbordes for the Hong Kong owner David Tsui, Urban Sea was crowned at 000 years in the most prestigious race in world, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Almanzor, "the champion of his generation"

Presented by the same stud farm years later, in August 2014, Almanzor was awarded € 100 to coach Jean-Claude Rouget. Sistercharlie, star in the United States

Having entered the ARQANA ring during the October Sale, the second largest sale devoted to yearlings in Deauville, where it was purchased for € 12.000 by broker Paul Nataf, Sistercharlie brilliantly started his career in France, notably taking 2nd place in the Prix de Diane. Purchased by billionaire Peter Brant shortly before this performance, it then joined the stables of coach Chad Brown in New York, for which it won 7 times at the highest level. This list of awards earned him the title of “Best Mare of the Year 2019” at the Eclipse Awards, a ceremony rewarding the best horses on the other side of the Atlantic.

Famous racehorse owners

Jean Gabin  bought his first yearling in 1969. He will be followed by Alain Delon who became the owner of five horses in 1971, four of which were the race winners. In 1974, Jean-Paul Belmondo who is convinced by his friend Pierre Vernier to buy a yearling in Deauville. Michel Sardou is also among racing enthusiasts, owner for many years with trainer Jean-Claude Rouget.

In recent years, these are Gérard Augustin-Normand, founder of the management company Richelieu Finance and Steve burggraf, creator of the Big Fernand restaurants that have embarked on the adventure. In 2017, the footballer Antoine Griezmann et Thierry gillier, co-founder of the Zadig & Voltaire brand, have decided to take their “colors” as owners of racehorses. Both buyers of several foals at ARQANA sales, they have already tasted the joys of victory at a high level thanks to TORNIBUSH and ALZIRE respectively.
