On Sunday October 4, 2020, the 99th edition of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe - the most prestigious event in the equestrian world - was won by the Italian jockey Cristian Demuro and the thoroughbred Sottsass, trained in Deauville. This triumph once again marks the excellence of the Deauville-La Touques racecourse training center.

A 100% Norman course

Born and bred near Lisieux at Haras des Monceaux - a benchmark stable for yearling sales - Sottsass, 4 years old, comes from the stallion Siyouni who breeds in Normandy with His Highness the Aga Khan. Only its owner, Peter Brant, is American. And it's at Deauville-La Touques racecourse training center that the horse was trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, of which it is the first victory in the Arc. He says :

The closer the race got, the more confident I was. Sotssass had a good rope number, a superb course. I told Cristian Demuro to wait because last year, he came a little early at the entrance to the straight line and there he started at the right time.
It has been a difficult year for everyone and for Sottsass in particular. It's never easy to win a race like this. "

A controlled race

During the race, Sottsass stood close behind, behind the leader Persian King, the great hope of the Prix Arc de Triomphe. Entering the straight line, he only had to attack Persian King to win. It was only 200 meters from the finish post that the resident of Jean-Claude Rouget took the advantage over In Swoop. In 2019, Sottsass came third in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe behind Waldgeist, Enable and Raabihah. For Cristian Demuro, it's a dream come true. He says :

"If I had been told that I would win the Arc! Yet I felt that it was my day, I did not know why! Since Tuesday, Sottsass has been awake, we had seen him in the morning. I wanted to to be there quickly because I didn't want to go through the slow pace. I galloped behind Persian King then I shifted Sottsass. He's really a champion. "
